Sony S1 and S2 Tablet Hands-On Reviews
Rumors started awhile back about Sony’s tablets, and now they’re finally out in the open and Sony showed the two tablets off today. We don’t have any specs or a release date yet, a bit odd but we’ll have to take what we can. We’ve got all the juicy details and a look at the different hands-ons around the web for you right here.
Sony has two tablets in the works for us. First up is the S1, a 9.4″ tablet with a 1280×768 display. The tablet has a lip at the top, which the lucky ones who got to get their hands on agreed made it feel great in their hands. The S1 will be WiFi only. The Sony S2 is one of the most unique tablets yet. Similar to the Nintendo DS or Kyocera Echo, the S2 folds in a clamshell design with two 5.5″ screens. With its smaller size, the S2 is going to come with AT&T HSPA+ on top of WiFi for mobile data. Both Tablets run Sony-fied versions of Honeycomb, with some interesting enhancements.
LaptopMag.com took a pretty neutral stance on the tablets, and we can’t blame them at this point. They do point out a lot of the unique features though:
Network Entertainment and PlaySation Games: As you might expect, Sony S1 and S2 tablet owners will have access to Sony eBooks, music and video from Qriocity, and PlayStation-certified games. That last bit means users will be able to play PS1 and PSP titles. Both the S1 and S2 will come pre-loaded with Crash Bandicoot and Pinball Hero.
In a quick demo of Crash Bandicoot on the S2, the 3D graphics were smooth, but having the whole 5.5-inch screen on the bottom dedicated to the gameplay buttons seemed like a bit of wasted space. We asked about titles that are truly optimized touch input, and Sony says those are coming. As you’ll see in the video, Crash plays at full screen on the S1, with the buttons arranged around the side of the screen.
With Playstation games, a la the Xperia Play, the S1 and S2 tablets could be big sellers to gamers. Other cool features include DLNA support and the ability to use the S1 as a remote control thanks to an IR blaster.
As far as physical design, Engadget had good things to see about the S1′s lip:
Let’s start with the S1, shall we? As far as hardware flourishes go, we’ll take ergonomic genius over a gimmick any day, and in that department, the S1 delivers. You see wedges all the time on laptops, but with a slate, it’s an unexpected, wonderful thing. It makes it easy to hold with one hand, and it improves viewing angles when you place it face-up on a table. What’s more, the S1 feels simply airy in the hands. We know, we know. We often come away from these events saying a tablet is lighter than it looks. (We’re looking at you, Toshiba Thrive.) But after handling some slates that are weightier than you’d expect (ahem, Touchpad), it’s refreshing to pick up something that feels well-made, yet unassuming. Sony also decked the tablet out in a textured finish, as you might guess by looking at that dot pattern in the photos. That, too, makes this one of the easier-to-grip slates we’ve handled.
They didn’t rave as much about the S2, saying that like the Kyocera Echo it suffers from a bezel separating the two screens. They do point out that the screens on both tablets are fine, but since Sony only demoed the tablets indoors, how they perform in direct sun is undetermined.
Finally PCMag.com gives us more detail in Sony’s interesting enhancements to the Honeycomb system. Specifically, Quick View, which loads images on web pages quicker, and Quick Touch which supposedly improves responsiveness of the touch screen:
There were demos of the tablets’ capabilities. Both feature Quick View and Quick Touch, two Sony-engineered enhancements of Android 3.0. Quick View offers what Sony reps admitted was the illusion of a site loading more quickly. Side-by-side, two S1 tablets, one in Quick View mode and one in regular Wi-Fi mode, loaded the same Web site. Indeed, Quick View loaded the site roughly eight seconds sooner than the other tablet, but the trick is rather simple: Quick View loads a Web page’s imagery before loading Java Script, offering only the appearance of a fully loaded page. So, it’s not actually loading the page eight seconds faster, but it’s giving you visuals, and in the first eight seconds, that’s probably all you need for typical Web browsing.
Quick Touch supposedly offers more fluid scrolling through menus and Web pages, but the demo merely showed a fluidity that Apple’s iPad has had since launch. That said, some tablets do not have such speedy scrolling and gesture response, so this definitely falls in the “pros” column—it just seems a tad much to name it and call it a feature.
We wish we had a bit more info on these tablets, but it looks like we’re finally starting to see some creativity and variety in tablets and that’s a win. Look forward to more details in the future as Sony releases them, and we get our own hands on these two interesting tablets.

IOS4 Tracks where you are constantly - then logs it when you connect to Itunes
Several Sources this morning are reporting that two British Security Researchers have discovered that IOS4 is constantly recording your location and logging the information without you knowing.During a sync operation the Operating system then copies the file containing location and datestamps, to your local computer, meaning historical data regarding your location can be recovered easily.
Simon Davies, director of the pressure group Privacy International, said: "This is a worrying discovery. Location is one of the most sensitive elements in anyone's life – just think where people go in the evening. The existence of that data creates a real threat to privacy. The absence of notice to users or any control option can only stem from an ignorance about privacy at the design stage."
The researchers have found no other mobile operating system synching location data in this way... Big Steve is watching you.

Acer Iconia A500 review
I Found it a little vague to be fair, but in these early days of honeycomb tablets I don't think anyone will be backing one tablet particularly until the verdict is out on all of them. One thing I will say though is that Acer are a great manufacturer in my opinion and this tablet is going to be a bit cheaper than the rest.

Latest worldwide figures show RIM and Nokia taking the hit for Androids gain
The Guardian has lots of exclusive facts and figures about the ongoing war in the market share of smartphones... it seems that google are marching on whilst RIM and Nokia bare the brunt of their assault.
The article descibes how RIMs market share has fallen from 32.5% in June 2010 to just 10.6% in March 2011, meaning that it only sold an estimated 1.4m devices there. Windows have sold only 1m of their new W7 mobiles so far and Nokia have lost massively in this sector.

Samsung galaxy s2 UK Launch
I'll leave it up to the press release on this one:
SAMSUNG ANNOUNCES UK AVAILABILITY OF THE GALAXY S II
Samsung’s most powerful smartphone yet set to hit UK shores on 1st May
11th April 2011, London, UK – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., today announces that its slimmest and lightest smartphone yet, the Samsung Galaxy S II (Model: GT-I9100), will be available in UK shops on 1st May 2011. The Galaxy S II is the first handset to offer Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus screen technology, the largest, brightest and most colourful screen available in Samsung’s portfolio of devices.
Super slim (8.49mm) and lightweight (116g) Samsung’s Galaxy S II runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and is super-fast thanks to its dual-core 1.2GHz processor. The device’s exceptionally bright screen makes it perfect for watching movies and TV or playing games and looking at apps, with its ground-breaking ‘organic’ LED technology, Super AMOLED Plus also saving energy so you can enjoy watching content without affecting the battery life.
The Galaxy S II is built for multi-tasking, its dual-core processor makes switching between applications and loading web pages such as Google, Yahoo and YouTube quick, whilst superior 3D hardware means games and videos can be loaded and played with ease. What’s more, there’s immediate access to content and services such as catch up TV and movie downloads, thanks to super-fast connectivity and WiFi, with speeds up to 21Mbps which provides increased download speeds, and Bluetooth 3.0+HS which reduces data transfer times significantly.
Simon Stanford, Managing Director, Mobile, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “From the moment it was revealed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona there has been a huge buzz about the Galaxy S II, so we’re pleased to announce that it will be available for UK customers to buy from 1st May. Our slimmest, lightest, fastest smartphone is our first device to offer of Super AMOLED Plus screen technology, alongside the most advanced technical specifications including the latest Android OS and a dual core processor. We’re confident it’s a great package for anyone wanting a superior smartphone experience.”
The Galaxy S II also features an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD recording and playback, Samsung’s patented AllShare technology so you can share pictures, movies, and music with other devices and Samsung’s new Kies Air which lets people manage their smartphone contents from their PC via local WiFi connections.
A new ‘Live Panel’ feature on the Galaxy S II allows aggregation of live web, social networking and application contents to a single customisable home-screen, whilst it’s possible to place all the important parts of your life onto three adjacent home screens which you can switch between simply by pressing and holding on the screen. As with all the Samsung Galaxy family, the Galaxy S II features Samsung Hubs, providing a huge range of entertainment content, advanced mobile games and the ability to manage social networking accounts.
The Samsung Galaxy S II will be available in the UK across all major networks and retailers.

Web browser Choice, which one is right for you?
So lets go through the candidates one by one and look at the pro's and cons of each starting with Microsoft's one browser which is installed by default on all windows pc's.
Internet Explorer 8: The windows default and still the most used browser in the world, although IE8 has proved itself more reliable than it's previous iteration I still find this browser bothersome to use as someone who browsers the web on a very regular basis. The thing I dislike about IE 8 is the lack of add-ins that other competing browsers, such as Mozillas Firefox and Google Chrome allow the end user to customise the browser and can greatly improve browsing usage and connectivity with other web based apps (such as twitter or your blog).
IE8 does however now include tabbed browsing, which is a massive improvement in my eyes, most people now who browse on a regular basis will have several tabs open at once, but again the Microsoft browser seems to lack the fluidity of it's competitors.
IE9 is just around the corner however and word from the beta testers is that it is greatly improved in terms of speed and fluidity and is HTML 5 compliant (Opera, Firefox and Chrome already are) although still lacking in the customisable options of other browsers and still no dedicated ad-blocking add in and with it's reputation ruined by earlier unstable and unusable iterations will this be enough to win back it's rapidly waning user base.

Google Translate for Android turns one, introduces experimental Conversation Mode (video)
We know very well what Google considers beta -- after all, Gmail, Docs, and Calendar all shared that status until mid-2009 -- but here's a chance to check out an experiment from Mountain View that's 'still in its earliest stages.' Google Translate for Android is celebrating its first birthday this month, and to celebrate, an update will be pushed out offering a number of UI tweaks as well as an alpha version of Conversation Mode. Never heard of it? A demo was given at IFA 2010, but in case you're still in the dark, it essentially lets two speakers talk to one another in their respective native tongues while the app speaks real-time translations. Right now it'll only do English and Spanish -- and even then expect some hiccups with 'regional accents, background noise or rapid speech' -- but the Babel fish has to start somewhere. Need more dialects / languages? Be patient, get a job for Google, or better yet, seek gainful employment with NIST / DARPA. Video from the IFA presentation is after the break and starts around the 26-minute mark.

Disguised as a mere toy, the original Mindflex is actually a kind of limited telekinesis simulator in that it allows you to control the up and down movements of a ball suspended in air by, well, flexing your brain. With the release of the Mindflex Duel, you can now test your telekinetic prowess against that of your closest friends. That's right, Mattel's latest offering allows you to play what amounts to tug-of-war (with a tiny foam ball) using only the power of your mind. The Duel also lets people play cooperatively, but that doesn't sound like nearly as much fun as hooking this to a stim unit for a little friendly competition and some elevated stakes for the loser. We're not sure why, but the mind games won't start until August, though the device is currently available for pre-order on Amazon for $99.99.

PermalinkSource – Sony to announce PSP2 in Tokyo on January 27
VG247 has learnt that Sony it to hold a “business overview and strategy meeting” in Tokyo on January 27, and has been told that Sony will use the event as a reveal platform for PSP2.
Nothing is known of the meeting’s content, but we do know that only “very select press” are attending.
Sources have said this morning that PSP2 will be announced at the showcase.
Sony has declined to comment on the chatter this morning.
In the wake of VG247 publishing this story, MCV has gone live with its own piece claiming “trade sources have confirmed” the console is to be announced at the event.
The console, which is currently under wraps, is expected to be released later this year.
Going by the codename VITA, PSP2 has been in the hands of developers for at least a year. VG247 published the first images of a development kit last November.
Netherrealm Studios and EA have openly said they’ve been working with the machine.
